Microscopic Depictions of Vanishing Shampoo Foam Examined by Time-of-Flight Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

A novel surfactant of N–dodecanoyl–N–(2-hydroxyethyl)–β–alanine (coded as C12–EtOH–βAla) was synthesized by modifying the methyl group N–dodecanoyl–N–methyl–β–alanine C12–Me–βAla). Amino-acid-type surfactants (C12–EtOH–βAla and C12–Me–βAla) are more healthy environmentally friendly compared to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). To investigate microstructures these new surfactants, we employed a method time-of-flight small-angle neutron scattering (TOF SANS) at pulsed source, Tokai Japan (J–PARC). The advances in TOF SANS enable simultaneous multiscale observations without changing detector positions, which is usually necessary for reactor or X-ray scattering. We performed situ real-time collapsing shampoo foam covering over wide range length scales from 100 0.1 nm. After starting an air pump, obtained time-resolved smaller wave number, attributed (1) single bimolecular layer with disk shape, (2) micelles layer, (3) incoherent due hydrogen atoms surfactants. micelle film same size found solution before foaming. thickness (~27 nm) stable long time (<3600 s), simultaneously Newton black 6 nm limit (~1000 s). different contrasts using protonated deuterated water crucial determining content film, about 10~5 wt%.
